My studio practice revolves around the notion of doing; the physical application of making. Through developing a personal practice in meditation, I was able to transfer the skill of awareness to question thoughts, desires and anxieties that had driven me to make work in the past. This led to a focus on process and repetitive action, as well as being stuck at home during lockdown, to create the highlighter works. A combination of being able to get back into the studio and a desire to use more space, led to painting. Paintings that played with the idea of uncertainty using language, direct use of media such as pastels, charcoal and acrylic; and completing a work in one session to get a directness across. These large-scale abstract works feel interesting and alive while still maintaining an obvious, process driven painterly quality.
